This course expands upon the Design Philosophy and Domain Awareness program by incorporating expanded design domains and design exceptions. Both of these concepts are acknowledged in the Austroads Guide to Road Design and TMR Road Planning and Design Manual.

The content of the course is not limited to road designers and design engineers, and is also recommended for those involved in the design administration process, particularly Project Managers, to increase their awareness of the reporting procedures. It is not a highly technical course.

About this course

The primary document used by the department to engage engineering consultants for the preconstruction phases of road design is the Project Brief.

This presentation will provide project managers and other staff involved in the procurement of engineering services for design with some guidelines that will assist in providing a more comprehensive and robust project scoping document.

This course provides information on project scope, and will answer the following questions:

  • Why do we want to define the project scope?
  • What are the benefits of a well designed brief?
  • How do we achieve a good outcome in writing the design brief/functional specification?

About this course

This course is to define Road Design and what is involved. It will introduce typical components of a road. You will learn how recognising the existing road and integrating new elements, enables a designer to produce a suitable solution.

This course also mentions external issues to the road design process that have to be considered to ensure appropriate outcomes.

Program Outcomes

At the completion of this program participants will:

  • show awareness of road elements that are considered when designing roads,
  • show awareness of some technical terminology used when designing a project,
  • be aware of environmental aspects that influence design outcomes,
  • be aware of what forms a suitable design,
  • and apply knowledge through a short test that reflects program content.

This course is designed to provide knowledge and develop skills in fundamental drainage (hydrology and hydraulic).

Participants will also develop an awareness of basic site assessment, hydrological conditions, design standards, determination of catchment runoff for rural environments and fundamentals of open channel flow.

The program introduces the Road Drainage Manual (RDM) and defines its purpose and usage.

Course Outcomes

At the completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • define the appropriate working boundaries of the RPDM
  • appreciate the importance of drainage in all road design projects
  • interpret, consider and apply the fundamental pronciples of hydrologic and hydraulic theory to projects.

CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

This program is ideal for all engineers, designers and project staff, managers or planners who are involved in planning and designing roadsides and road safety barriers.

At the completion of this program participants will be able to:

  • Apply the generalised hazard assessment process in their projects.
  • Understand standard roadside and road safety barrier terminology.
  • Use road safety barrier design theory to calculate standard barrier requirements.
  • Identify hazards and select suitable treatments under a given context.
