Cyclist and pedestrian safety at roadworks

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has committed to improving road safety across the Queensland road network. Roadworks, and the changes to the road (and roadside) environment, can raise safety and accessibility issues for people walking and riding bicycles. Roadworks can create an unsafe environment for these users if safe and appropriate alternative paths of travel and crossings are not provided.

The cyclist and pedestrian safety at roadworks course will provide:

  • an overview of the key guidance and information to assist in creating safe roadworks sites for people who walk, ride bicycles and other path users,
  • information on why safety and accessibility for people walking and riding at roadworks is important,
  • information on how to safely provide for people who walk, ride bicycles and path users through roadworks, and
  • practice examples and case studies of how to resolve common issues.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Safety issues for people walking and riding at traffic management sites.
  • Relevant technical guidance, including guidance that might be used in tight situations.
  • Examples of providing for path users and riders on roads.
  • Considerations during planning, design, implementation, and operation.

There is a short quiz at the end of the course to reinforce key learnings.
